Double Caffeinated coffee available at 7-Eleven

February 18, 2007 - As if the caffeine content in our morning cup of Joe wasnt enough - 7-Eleven has decided to add supplemental caffeine extracts into their newly launched "Fusion Energy Coffee". The extract which is obtained from guarana, gingseng and yerba mate - is being added to coffee, creating a beverage with almost twice the concentration of caffeine.

Interestingly, guarana contains almost twice the concentration of caffeine than coffee (~ 4%), while mate contains even less caffeine (~0.7%) - but much higher concentrations of other alkaloids - namely, theophylline and theobromine. These compounds are not as "potent" stimulants as caffeine - each reacting much differently in the human body when ingested.

Theophylline for example, is commonly used in asthma medication since it relaxes smooth muscle such as those found in the bronchials, while increasing heart rates. Whereas theobromine produces a milder, longer lasting stimulus with mood improving effects.

Hmm.....perhaps 7-Eleven is on to something entirely new......in essence, creating a beverage that is "caffeinated, stimulating, yet still relaxing and capable of providing mood improving effects"
