Is coffee the new "health" drink?

November 22, 2006 - Is coffee the next "health" drink? Hmm, well with all the stigma surrounding coffee, its difficult to even phatom the idea, but a recent study may soon be change the public's mind. According to a 15 year study of over 27,000 women, those who drank 4-6 cups had a 28% reduction in the development of Diabetes Type II compared to those than drank two or less.

The study which will appear in May in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggest that antioxidants in coffee may be responsible for this benefit. Actually, several compounds in coffee may contribute to its antioxidant capacity, including phenols, volatile aroma compounds and oxazoles that are efficiently absorbed.

According to Rune Blomhoff, professor of nutrition at the University of Oslo -  “We were surprised to learn that coffee quantitatively is the major contributor of antioxidants in the diet both in Norway and in the U.S.A.,”
