Vitamin E used as an indicator for adulterated Brazilian coffee.

News - Chemistry/Science
September 4, 2007 - Coffee has always suffered from adulteration problems since the beginning of the coffee trade. Now reseachers in Illinois are measuring residual vitamin E concentrations in coffee as a way to identify adulterated Brazilian coffee blends. Since most adulterations usually include the addition of "fillers" such as grain, cereal, coffee twigs and corn - their identification is becoming more difficult. Luckily, roasted corn samples contain have high concentrations of vitamin E, making it a prime "fingerprint" for adulteration. In laboratory tests scientist found that one brand of Brazilian coffee contained almost 9 percent corn.

Although preliminary, scientists believe the method is promising. Paper to be presented in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, August 8, 2007, "Gamma-Tocopherol as a Marker of Brazilian Coffee (Coffea arabica L.) Adulteration by Corn".

Caffeine content in espresso vs drip coffee.

News - Caffeine

One of the most commonly asked question we receive is: "is it true that espresso coffee has more caffeine than regular drip coffee? "

Ask almost anyone and they will invariably say that espresso has more caffeine than regular coffee. I mean it makes perfect sense, what else would explain that caffeine buzz we get when we down a shot of Starbucks espresso in the morning?

Interesting, but is this correct? Well that depends on your perspective.

News - Caffeine

June 10, 2007- caffeinated creamer? Sounds redundant, well apperantly not.  Whitewave Foods, a subsidiary of Dean Foods will be releasing a caffeinated version of a coffee creamer. The 13 milliliter capsule contains approximately 40 mg of caffeine per serving, making each capsule the equivalent content of an espresso shot in terms of caffeine content.

Marketed under the name "Stok" the creamer is due out around September of this year. Interesingly the "creamer" contains no cream or dairy product at all, but rather flavored aqueous caffeine intended for addition to coffee or consumed directly.

Although the product is not necessarily dangerous in and of itself, it does come with a warning label - "Limit 2/day. High Caffeine. Not for those under 18, pregnant or caffeine sensitive."
